The efforts of the former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, to vacate a lower court ruling that he pays N6bn damages on defamation to the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili have failed.
The Supreme Court ruled on Friday dismissing the case for lacking merit.
It would be recalled that Peterside had during a press conference in Port Harcourt defamed Odili when he alleged that the Governor Nyesom Wike’s Supreme Court victory was hatched by the former Governor.
Following the allegation, Odili in October 2016 went to court to challenge Peterside over the allegation.
Odili won the case in High Court of Rivers State which forced Peterside to head to the Appeal Court where he also lost.
In the Supreme Court a judgment by Justice Adamu Jauro who led other seven-member panel of justices dismissed the appeal by Peterside.
He is therefore to pay the N6bn damages to Odili.
It is expected that Peterside may have to resort to other means of settling the matter with Odili or be faced with coughing out the huge sum.
