CCC Advises ANLCA Leadership to Adopt Global Standard on Selection of New Board of Trustees
*Identifies 12 globally acceptable qualifications to serve on a board of trustees

The Secretary of the Customs Consultative Committee (CCC), Dr. Eugene Nweke, has advised the leadership of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) to adopt global standard and acceptable qualifications as it plans to elect members of board of trustees to serve the association.
Nweke said this had become necessary considering the crucial role that the board members play in ensuring every organisation’s success.
In a press statement, Nweke said, “it is important to ensure that the process of selecting or electing individuals who ascend into the organization’s board, is premised on a clearer understanding of the official demanding of the exalted office”.
He identified 12 globally acceptable qualifications to serve on a board of trustees, are typically as follow:
1. _Integrity and Ethics_: High moral character and a strong sense of ethics.
2. _Expertise and Experience_: Relevant knowledge and experience in a specific field or industry.
3. _Leadership Skills_: Proven leadership abilities and a track record of effective decision-making.
4. _Strategic Thinking_: Ability to think strategically and contribute to long-term planning.
5. _Communication Skills_: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
6. _Financial Literacy_: Basic understanding of financial management and reporting.
7. _Governance Knowledge_: Familiarity with governance principles and best practices.
8. _Relevant Education and Training_: Advanced degree or certification in a relevant field (e.g., MBA, law, or accounting).
9. _Diversity and Inclusion_: Representation from diverse backgrounds, industries, and perspectives.
10. _No Conflicts of Interest_: Absence of conflicts of interest or ability to manage conflicts effectively.
11. _Commitment and Availability_: Willingness to dedicate time and effort to the organization.
12. _Reputation and Network_: Strong professional reputation and network.
Nweke also added that as a “board of trustees of professional accredited freight forwarding association, it behoves on the ANLCA electoral umpire ( ASECO), under the executive supervision of the National President, Chief Emenike Nwokeji, to appreciate the place of setting international or industry standards and best practices in every professional leadership demands and operational practices, as this forms the bedrock for evolving professionalism in the freight forwarding profession”.
He urged the National President and management team to use constitutional provisions at their disposal to do away with mediocracy and all forms of interests falling short of professional interests.
“Most importantly, tribalism and religion in whatever manifestations or representations should be done away with. Therefore, let professional standard apply.
“The industry stakeholders look forward to seeing only qualified members of ANLCA emerge as board of trustees.
“Equally, it must be observed that, while specific qualifications may vary depending on the organization, industry, or jurisdiction, a general criteria to provide a foundation for selecting qualified and effective board members is also listed to guide eligible members involve in the selection or election processes.
“The essence and focus point here, is for a would be board member to understand his place in the organization, and stay within the ambit of his trusted bits, so as to guarantee administrative fluidity and cohesion at all times, devoid of cross functions, and misplacement of interests”.
