President, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Iju Tony Nwbaunike, has said that the ravaging coronavirus pandemic has its own positive effect on individuals and businesses.
Nwabunike said though the pandemic has crippled many businesses and existing ideas, it has also led to the emergence of new ideas.
In a chat with SHIPPING DAY, he said the pandemic has now forced many freight forwarders and consultants to begin to use technology to achieve results.
He said, “I always tell everybody that coronavirus has affected the whole world on very negative side, but came in with so many positive aspect of life. Negative in the case that it has crippled businesses, you know our business is all about opening Form M and invoices. Most people do importation as Nigeria is an importing nation. Even in export, coronavirus has affected many. The issue about coronavirus is that too many things have happened. But I always go home with one thing, Jack Ma said, Jack Ma is CEO of Alibaba Incorporation. He said that profit this year is life, that if you are alive this year, then count yourself as profitable . On this note, so many things have gone wrong but for me I think it is a lesson that everyone should learn, a lesson to get prepared, getting yourself diversified, a lesson that it is not all about physical contact on issue, it is a lesson we should know, we should put more technology into our businesses, a lesson that you can do networking about business. Like I will tell you that during this Covid-19, I have set up two good companies online and they are making good money. So it is not all about physical movement to make money. People should begin to rethink , people should begin to use their next ideas. Covid -19 has thought us a whole lot of ideas despite the fact that it has crippled existing ideas, new ideas emerged. That is what I can say about covid-19”.
Responding to the call by the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) on freight forwarders to think of automation to reduce human traffic at the ports, Nwabunike this was the way forward.
According to him, “ Every freight forwarder or even consultant should begin to know online is the way forward and should begin to do things online”.
